Udacity vs DataCamp: Nanodegree or Browser Practice
Udacity vs DataCamp compared on price, format and depth, checked September 2026 — a reviewed multi-month project sequence against cheap, repeated practice.
Both teach technical, data-adjacent skills, and both ask you to actually build something rather than just watch a lecture. Past that they diverge completely. Udacity is a multi-month, project-based "Nanodegree" with a human reviewing your submitted work and sending it back until it clears a bar, at a price that reflects that reviewer’s time. DataCamp is short video broken up by interactive coding exercises you complete in the browser in minutes, at a fraction of the cost, with nobody reading your code at all.
Prices, plans and policies below were checked on 19 September 2026. Both platforms adjust terms and promotions often — confirm the current figure on each one’s own site before paying.
The short answer
If you want fluency in a specific language or tool through short, repeated practice — Python, SQL, a BI tool — and want it cheaply, DataCamp. If you want a fixed, multi-month project sequence in software engineering, data science or AI engineering with a real person grading your submitted work, Udacity, at several times the price.
What each one actually is
Udacity teaches software engineering, data science, AI and a handful of adjacent technical fields through "Nanodegree" programs — a fixed syllabus built around real projects, with human reviewers who grade what you submit and send it back until it meets a bar. That reviewer loop is Udacity’s actual product; a subscription elsewhere rarely includes a person reading your code.
DataCamp is narrower still and describes itself as teaching data science and AI from the comfort of your browser — Python, R and SQL; Tableau, Power BI and Excel; cloud and data tooling; and a growing set of applied AI courses. The format is the whole point: watch two minutes, then type real code into an embedded editor that checks it instantly, no separate environment to set up.
Price, as of September 2026
Udacity runs a flat subscription rather than a per-program fee: $249 a month, or a four-month bundle for $846 — a 15% saving over paying month to month. That unlocks the full Nanodegree catalogue for as long as you keep paying.
DataCamp currently advertises Premium at $14 a month billed annually — described on the page as a discounted rate against a standard price of around $28 a month — covering more than 790 courses, projects, certificates and its industry certifications. Teams runs the same $14 per user per month annually, with admin and reporting added.
On an annual basis that is roughly $2,538 to $2,988 for Udacity against roughly $168 for DataCamp — Udacity costs somewhere between fifteen and eighteen times as much. That gap buys a specific thing: a person reading and grading your actual project work, on a fixed multi-month syllabus, rather than a self-paced library of short exercises.
The free tiers
DataCamp’s Basic plan is free and includes the first chapter of every course, plus cheat sheets, tutorials, skill assessments and mobile access — no certificates and no full courses. Udacity offers a genuinely large free catalogue of standalone introductory courses in Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning, but without certificates, project feedback or mentor support, which are reserved for the paid subscription; some Nanodegree programs also run a free trial of the paid experience before billing starts.
Accreditation — neither offers it, for the same reason
Udacity is a private company and, by its own support documentation, is not an accredited educational institution — its Nanodegree certificates carry no academic credit, with one narrow exception: a specific AI-focused Master’s pathway run in partnership with an accredited European institution, not the general catalogue. DataCamp certifies against its own internal standard and makes no accreditation claim at all. Both certificates are a private company’s record that you finished the material, which is a real and useful thing to have — it is simply not the same claim as a degree, the distinction do AI certificates mean anything covers in more depth.
Where they really differ
- Review model. Udacity has a person grade your submitted project and send it back until it passes. DataCamp checks your typed code automatically, instantly, with no human review at any tier.
- Format. Udacity is a fixed multi-month project sequence per Nanodegree. DataCamp is short video plus an exercise, repeated, with no fixed end date.
- Scope. Udacity covers software engineering and AI engineering more broadly, not only data. DataCamp stays inside data, analytics and applied AI tooling specifically.
- Price. DataCamp costs a small fraction of Udacity’s subscription — the gap is closer to a factor of fifteen than a factor of two.
- Depth of practice. If the goal is muscle memory in a language through repetition, DataCamp’s exercise-per-lesson format is built for exactly that. Udacity’s projects are fewer and larger, closer to a portfolio piece than a drill.
Pick DataCamp if
- You want to get genuinely fluent in Python, SQL or a specific BI tool through short, repeated practice, and cost is a real constraint.
- You learn better from typing code every couple of minutes than from a longer, less frequent project cycle.
- Your interest stays inside data, analytics or applied AI tooling specifically, rather than software engineering more broadly.
Pick Udacity if
- You want a real person reading and grading your project work, and that feedback loop is worth several times the price to you.
- Your goal spans software engineering or AI engineering more broadly, not only the data-analytics slice DataCamp covers.
- You want a fixed, multi-month structure rather than an open-ended library of short lessons you sequence yourself.
If the real goal is a job
Neither subscription is the thing that gets someone hired on its own. Job-posting data from Indeed’s Hiring Lab puts the weight on demonstrable work — a project, a repository, an analysis a candidate can actually talk through — and the advertised requirements behind AI engineer job postings are consistently about what was built and how it was evaluated, not which platform a person studied on. A Udacity project with real reviewer feedback is a stronger single artefact than a DataCamp completion badge, but a self-directed project built with neither subscription works just as well if you already know what to build. A lot of people land on this comparison wanting neither a software engineering career change nor deep data fluency — they want to stop being the person at work who has not learned to use the AI tools everyone else already has. That is a smaller, more habitual problem than either platform is built to solve, and it needs something that fits around a job rather than a multi-month project sequence or a growing stack of completed exercises.
