Coursera vs Udacity: Which One Is Actually Worth the Money
Coursera vs Udacity compared on price, accreditation, format and mentor support, checked September 2026 — and an honest answer about which one fits your actual goal.
Both call what they sell a "Nanodegree" or a "certificate", both are subscriptions, and both get pitched as ways into a tech career. Past that, they are built differently enough that the comparison only makes sense once you know what each one is actually for.

The short answer
If you want a credential from a named university, or you are studying something outside software and data, Coursera. If you want a structured, project-based path into software engineering, data science or AI engineering specifically, with a human reviewing your actual project work, Udacity does that better — for a meaningfully higher monthly price.
What each one actually is
Coursera is a marketplace: courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates and full accredited degrees produced by universities and companies, spanning every subject from machine learning to public health to the humanities. The credential you finish with carries the partner institution's name.
Udacity is narrower and more structured on purpose. It teaches software engineering, data science, AI and a handful of adjacent technical fields through "Nanodegree" programs — a fixed syllabus, real projects, and human reviewers who grade your submitted project work and send it back until it meets a bar. That reviewer loop is Udacity's actual differentiator; nobody grades your code by hand on a $14-a-month subscription elsewhere.
Price, as of September 2026
Coursera Plus lists at $59 a month or $399 a year, with a promotional rate of $35 a month for the first three months running to 23 September 2026. It covers more than 10,000 courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates, but not accredited degrees and not every individual course.
Udacity runs a flat subscription rather than a per-program fee: $249 a month, or a four-month bundle for $846, a 15% saving over paying monthly. That subscription unlocks Udacity's full catalogue of Nanodegree programs and courses for as long as you keep paying — there is no separate per-program purchase any more.
On a like-for-like basis that is roughly $399 a year against roughly $2,538 to $2,988 a year, depending on the billing option — Udacity is several times the cost of Coursera Plus. That gap buys the project-review model and a narrower, more hands-on syllabus; it does not buy accreditation, which is the next point.
Accreditation — the point most comparisons skip
Coursera's degree programs are accredited, because they are delivered by accredited universities that happen to use Coursera as the platform. Udacity is a private company and, by its own support documentation, is not an accredited educational institution — its Nanodegree certificates are not credit-bearing and Udacity does not accept or grant transfer credit with other institutions. Its one accredited route is a specific AI-focused Master's pathway run in partnership with an accredited European institution, not the general Nanodegree catalogue.
None of that makes a Nanodegree worthless — the project-based format and reviewer feedback are real skill-building, and that is a fair thing to pay for. The free tiers
Coursera lets you preview the first module of most courses free, including graded assessments, with public-interest courses free outright. Udacity offers a genuinely large free catalogue — standalone introductory courses in Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning — but without certificates, project feedback, or mentor support; those are reserved for the paid subscription. Some Nanodegree programs also offer a free trial period of the paid experience before billing starts.
Where they really differ
- Breadth. Coursera spans every subject. Udacity is software, data, AI and a small set of adjacent technical fields, full stop.
- Review model. Udacity grades submitted projects by hand and sends them back until they pass a bar. Coursera relies mostly on automated grading and peer review, with the specific process varying by partner.
- Accreditation. Coursera offers accredited degrees through partner universities. Udacity does not, outside one narrow AI Master's pathway.
- Cost. Coursera Plus is a fraction of Udacity's subscription price, by a factor of six to seven on an annual basis.
- Pace. Udacity's Nanodegrees are built around a fixed multi-month project sequence. Coursera courses vary from a few hours to a multi-year degree, so the time commitment is whatever you pick.
Pick Coursera if
- You want an accredited degree or a certificate with a specific institution's name behind it.
- Your subject is not software or data — business, health, humanities, design.
- Cost is a real constraint and you can be disciplined without a reviewer chasing you.
Pick Udacity if
- You specifically want software engineering, data science or AI engineering, and you learn better with a fixed project sequence than an open marketplace.
- Having a real person review your project work and send it back is worth several times the price to you.
- You are past the exploration stage and already know the exact technical path you are on.
If the real goal is a job
Neither subscription is what gets you hired. The postings behind AI engineer jobs are consistently specific about what you have built and how you evaluated it — a reviewed Nanodegree project can genuinely help supply that evidence, but so can a self-directed project with no subscription attached. If you are building a case for a career change without a degree, certification without a degree for work from home covers which credentials actually carry weight.
How these fit the wider set
Udacity is the structured, reviewed, technical-only option in this family. The case where neither fits
A lot of people land on this comparison wanting neither a degree nor a software engineering career change — they want to stop being the person at work who has not learned to use AI tools yet. That is a smaller, more habitual problem than either platform is built to solve, and it needs something that fits around a job rather than a multi-month project sequence.

Before you subscribe
Write down the credential or skill you actually need in three months. If the sentence names a university or a subject outside software and data, Coursera. If it names a specific technical career path and you want someone checking your work, Udacity — but budget for it being several times the price.
