Coursera vs Codecademy: Which One Actually Fits What You Are Learning
Coursera vs Codecademy compared on price, format and certificates, checked September 2026 — and which one fits learning to code versus everything else Coursera covers.
These solve different problems more than they compete for the same one. Codecademy is built to teach you to write code, in the browser, with immediate feedback on every line. Coursera is a marketplace of courses from universities and companies across every subject, including but not limited to coding. If your goal is specifically "learn to code", the comparison is close. If your goal is anything else — data analysis, a university-branded certificate, a subject with no code involved — Coursera is really the only one of the two actually built for it.

The short answer
If you want to learn to code specifically, with hands-in-browser exercises and immediate feedback on syntax errors, Codecademy is built for exactly that and does it well. If you want a course, Specialization or accredited credential in something else — or you want to combine coding with a broader field like data science taught by a named university — Coursera is the wider and often cheaper option.
What each one actually is
Codecademy is a coding-specific learning platform. Interactive, browser-based exercises, immediate syntax feedback, and structured Skill Paths and Career Paths in languages and frameworks — Python, JavaScript, SQL, web development, data science, and a growing set of AI-adjacent skill paths. It does not teach subjects outside code and data.
Coursera is a marketplace: individual courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates and full accredited degrees produced by universities and companies, spanning every subject from machine learning to public health to the humanities. Coding is one category among many rather than the whole platform, and the teaching format is closer to a university course — video lectures, readings, graded assignments — than to an interactive code editor.
Price, as of September 2026
Codecademy runs two paid tiers on top of a free one. Plus is $14.99 a month billed annually, or $29.99 billed month to month, and unlocks the course catalogue and most Skill Paths. Pro is $19.99 a month billed annually, or $39.99 billed month to month, and adds Career Paths, human code review on projects, interview preparation and verified professional certifications. Coursera Plus lists at $59 a month or $399 a year, covering more than 10,000 courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates — but not accredited degrees, which are priced and enrolled separately from the Plus subscription.
On an annual basis, that is roughly $180 (Codecademy Plus) to $240 (Codecademy Pro) against $399 for Coursera Plus. Codecademy is meaningfully cheaper if coding is genuinely all you want, because you are not paying for a catalogue of subjects you will never open.
Certificates — neither is accreditation
Codecademy’s certificates — both the completion certificate and the Pro-tier "professional certification" — are records that you finished the material, issued by Codecademy as a private company. They are not accredited coursework and do not carry academic credit anywhere. Coursera’s position is split: its individual courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates work the same way as Codecademy’s — a private-company or partner-branded record of completion, not a credential-granting body on their own — but its full degree programs are accredited, because they are delivered by accredited universities that use Coursera as the platform rather than by Coursera itself.
That distinction between "a record of completion" and "an accredited qualification" is worth sitting with regardless of which platform you pick — it is the whole argument of do AI certificates mean anything, and it applies to a Codecademy Pro certification exactly as much as it applies to a non-degree Coursera certificate.
The free tiers
Codecademy’s free tier is genuinely usable for learning: a real subset of introductory courses with the same interactive exercises, just without Skill Paths, projects, or certificates. Coursera lets you audit most individual courses free, including watching lectures and doing readings, but graded assignments and the certificate itself sit behind payment on most courses — a smaller free slice than Codecademy’s, though Coursera’s free public-interest courses are a partial exception.
Where they really differ
- Scope. Coursera spans every subject a university teaches. Codecademy is coding, data and a handful of adjacent technical skills, full stop.
- Format. Codecademy is interactive: you write real code in the browser and get feedback on the syntax immediately. Coursera is closer to a recorded university course — lectures, readings, assignments — even in its technical content.
- Certificates. Codecademy’s are private-company records of completion at every tier. Coursera’s non-degree certificates work the same way, but Coursera additionally offers accredited degrees through partner universities, which Codecademy does not offer at all.
- Price for coding specifically. Codecademy is cheaper if code is genuinely the only thing you want to learn, because Coursera’s price partly buys access to subjects outside coding that you may never use.
- Human feedback. Codecademy Pro adds human code review on projects. Coursera’s review is mostly automated grading or peer review, varying by course.
Pick Codecademy if
- Learning to write code is specifically the goal, and you want to type real syntax and get immediate feedback rather than watch a lecture about it.
- You want the lower price and do not need subjects outside code, data or the adjacent technical skill paths.
- Human review of your actual project code, available on the Pro tier, is worth the higher of the two tiers to you.
Pick Coursera if
- Your subject is not coding — or coding is one part of a broader field like data science, business or public health that you want taught with university-level structure.
- An accredited degree or a named-institution credential matters for your goal.
- You would rather learn from recorded lectures and readings than write syntax in a browser exercise.
If the real goal is a job
Neither subscription is what gets you hired on its own. What actually shows up in postings for technical roles is a finished, honestly evaluated project — covered from the hiring side in what artificial intelligence and machine learning jobs are actually hiring for — and Codecademy’s project-based Skill Paths are a reasonable way to produce one, but so is a self-directed project built from AI project ideas that actually teach you something with no subscription attached. If the goal is a credential without a traditional degree, certification without a degree for work from home covers which of these actually carry weight with employers.
How this fits the wider set
Codecademy is the interactive, coding-only option in this family, closest in spirit to Coursera vs DataCamp if your actual interest is data rather than general programming. The case where neither fits
A lot of people land on this comparison already knowing they do not want to become a software engineer — they want to stop being the person at work who has not learned to use AI tools properly yet. Neither Codecademy’s coding curriculum nor Coursera’s course marketplace is really built to fix that specific, smaller, more habitual problem.
